No, but yes please Oct 7, 2012

If I got a machining center, industrial robot or a mobile X-ray or radiography/fluoroscopy unit, I could sell it off and make more than I do in three or four years slaving away in front of a computer.

However, if the translation was about "natto" smelly, fermented soy beans, no thank you!

I've been sent free copies of books I've worked on. Does that count?

Like Mary I have been sent free copies of books (the source text and later on the printed translation) and one of my clients always includes a photo of the packaging so that I understand what I am talking about (hair care appliances). I would not mind at all having a free sample of some home theaters...

Coffee Oct 7, 2012

As for me, the only thing I can recall off-hand is a bag of coffee. Don't expect the car repair equipment, but some of the text books would be nice to have, and oh for the restaurant dishes, the hotel services and the wine...

It is a superfluous question as if you have to translate something, then you need the source text, and it you are interpreting, you should be familiar with the subject?

Or have I misunderstood the question?

Food supplements and drug products Oct 7, 2012

One of my regular clients is a food supplement and drug product distributor, and they presented me with their products once. I do use those products myself, by the way!

No -t yet :) Oct 7, 2012

I will receive a copy of the poetry I wrote for one client...as soon as it's published.

Thus far, I have received no free samples. Some of them, e. g. natural cosmetics, would surely be welcome. So would be a grill and the videos I've translated for dubbing.

However, I'm not too sure that I would appreciate a complete transformer station. Might be a problem storing it....

Yes Oct 7, 2012

Gourmet "Bomba" rice and some nice wine, both from the same company.
That's all that I can recall, although one client eventually let me keep a laptop they lent me to do a translation about ITC networks when they got their new ones in...

Oh, and (pax, Mary) I'd also forgotten about books; I was given one about landscape art and another about animal welfare I translated.

I was part of a team that did the revision/editing of an English>Spanish dictionary of criminal law terms, and the author sent a few complimentary copies.

Enjoy your weekend!

I´d wish Oct 7, 2012

Hi!
One of my clients sends electronic product documentation: electronic instruments, digital cameras, TVs, etc.
I´ve always wished they send a free sample of each product with the documentation, but I don´t think it´ll ever happen.
Once I wrote a comment along these lines to the agency´s PM, she replied she had been wishing the same for the past 20 years.

Have a great Sunday!
Marina
