Not for translations Feb 11, 2013

But I sometimes get a "tip" for consecutive interpretations.

Other Feb 11, 2013

Not quite the same thing, but on a couple of ocasions, university departments have asked me to issue a bill in advance for work not yet commisioned, so that they can use up what is left over from that year's budget (otherwise they have to return the remaining funds). In fact, one of them is still "in credit" with me from 2011.

PS: I've been given gifts, such as copies of books or concert tickets.

Several times this year two of my clients have padded the word count.

Aside from gifts, like Neilmac said, it has happened as far as I can remember on two occassions: once I was paid by cheque and the cheque included a little extra 'to cover the bank charges', the other time we agreed a rate for a project of around 40,000 words and when I sent the translation they told me to increase the rate by 1 cent per word on my invoice, which was nice.

By mistake, or so I thought Feb 11, 2013

A client has ever paid me three times what i had ivoiced him around this last Christmas. I had to write to them to find out if it was a gift to me or something. They had done it by mistake and so I refunded the difference.

Hourly rate Feb 11, 2013

Yes, when working on an hourly rate, one of my clients has on several occasions told me to invoice for more hours than I said I'd actually worked as he felt the job was worth more - nice!

Yes. I remember two cases when besides the normal payment the Client have paid me bonus for very good job. I was flattered. But it really was almost 'mission impossible'.

I had agreed an hourly rate with a cap for a review job. The time it took to get the text up to the right standard exceeded the cap, but the client valued the result and agreed to pay based on the hourly rate. A valued client indeed.

Yes, twice Feb 11, 2013

In both cases, I was paid more because the clients said I exceeded their expectations in terms of accuracy, feedback on original document and turnaround time. The jobs were a book translation and a legal document translation.

three times (one for interpreting, in this case was asked before signing papers to "bill some extra hours"), another time for a very difficult rush translation. The third time I didn't know about and was lucky to ask prior to refunding. I remember quite well because I was carrying-out netbanking, browser window open, entered the amount to be refunded and then had the idea to contact the customer before doing so.

Usually for creative work/translation. Twice one of my clients doubled (yes, 200%) the price, which was very generous and a nice "little extra" for me.

Only once Feb 11, 2013

I have ever been paid 10% more than agreed, since the client thought the translation was a little better than he has expected.

yes, by mistake Feb 11, 2013

I was paid 10 times over, and it was the biggest check I've ever received... Unfortunately I could not cash it
