Outside the US, I have only actually lived in Mexico. I spoke Spanish except at home, where I spoke Portuguese with my husband. Found myself forgetting English.

I lived in Belgium for 30 years (1986-2016), besides French (language I used everyday), German and Flemish are also national official languages. I do regret not having the time to learn at least one of them...

I lived in Sweden for about six months in 1973. I found my knowledge of German enabled me to get the gist of newspaper articles. I learned very little Swedish. I could never understand anything said to me in Swedish, though I could make myself understood using the few words I knew. Fortunately most Swedes speak English. I spent over two years in Hong Kong in the early fifties, but that was in the RAF, so in an English-speaking community. I spent 3 months in Aveiro (2016) and 3 months in Lisbon (2017) to attend first and second semester classes for my PhD program. I can speak fluent basic Portuguese now... and I hope not to lose it.

I lived for 2 years in Germany and speak quite good German. I also lived for 11 years in France and speak French, but not perfectly, (we spoke English at home and I was an English teacher).
I rarely use German or French professionally, but they are nice to know and sometimes come in handy.
