Shouldn't "nothing" be an option? | Nov 28, 2023 |
I'm actually very interested in finding out what people here use it for. I've tested ChatGPT's three obvious applications (MT, style, research) and found it unhelpful. | | | Proposed role for ChatGPT | Nov 28, 2023 |
I think of ChatGPT as that appliance I tried a couple of times when it was new and I was excited. Now it stays back in the darkest part of the most inaccessible cupboard in my kitchen. Sometimes I notice it's there. But then I move on.

I've used it some time ago a couple of times for acronym research, but I must have been lucky then. The last times I tried, it failed miserably and it took me way too long to find something useful compared to a conveniontal Google search. As far as machine translation is concerned, I see (at this point) no reason whatsover to prefer it over DeepL. And style... We do have some pride being a translator, haven't we ? So I would never use it to boost my style after translation. I would prefer my own that I (luckily) consider superior to the artificially pimped up ChatGPT chitchat. Actually ChatGPT is most useful for people who are not very good in writing, so that already should exclude every professional translator (in a perfect world). | | | Thomas Lof Local time: 21:22 2020に入会 英語 から オランダ語 + ... Theft of intellectual property | Nov 28, 2023 |
AI and translation applications like MT-based systems 'steal' your translations, being an intellectual property, by 'learning' themselves how to translate properly... leaving you with post-editing jobs only for a fee at a rate of 1/3 till 1/5 compared to going rate not only for the initial customer you worked for, but cross-customer too... I have found out very much to my surprise. AI/MT ignores your copyright! It is so sad Proz.com promotes these mal-practices...

Paid DeepL MT doesn't use your translations for self-learning or any other possible use. It doesn't even store your translations. | | | Lingua 5B ボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナ Local time: 21:22 2009に入会 英語 から クロアチア語 + ... The Broken Record technique | Nov 28, 2023 |

I've been using OPUS Cat to speed up typing during translation, but recently I caught it sucking my RAM like crazy, which had never happened before. Maybe it was just a bug, but I no longer have that thing on all the time. It's not something that significanly speeds up my work flow; what really does is my own prior work saved in a TM. Maybe it was just a bug, but I no longer have that thing on all the time. It's not something that significanly speeds up my work flow; what really does is my own prior work saved in a TM. Getting a bunch of documents like NDT reports or WPS certificates where I've already translated everything is the kind of job that I can do very quickly and with a relaxed approach. I read posts here about acronym research, and yet I can't help doubting that Chat is indeed a great acronym research tool for all languages. Will it help much if your segment looks like "СВСУ, СКУ ХВО, СКУ ВП, СКУ КВО ПРК, СКУ МПУ ОС, СКУ ТО, СКУ РО, СВБУ, ТС ОДУ, ПТК ЛЗ, ПУ, СТД ГЦНА, САУ ДГУ САЭ и ПТК МПУ СБ, ПТК В СБ, ИнЧ АЗ/ПЗ, ПТК МПУ СБ, АСВД, ШУ АКС, ИспЧ и ИнЧ ДСЗ, ИспЧ СУЗ-УСБТ, СКГА, СКУ В, СКУ СВО, СКУ ПТиТГ, СПНИ, СКУД, СВРК, СВРД" and all you know is that these are names of NPP systems in the APCS? Just in case, these acronyms can't be found in any one source, and the customer will only provide the full versions if requested (and never on the same day). I recently had to do just that and even delivered the job on time though it was really hard and contained many more acronyms. Since I'm not stealing anyone's jobs here, maybe the readers won't hate me too much for working into English from time to time, but whatever, it's the managers who decide in which direction I'm supposed to work ▲ Collapse

Artificial intelligence is like artificial flowers | Nov 28, 2023 |
Artificial flowers look OK on a grave if you live a long way away and do not have time to keep putting fresh flowers there. You can still remember your beloved granny in so many other ways, and get on with real life. Sometimes, you do have to replace even artificial flowers... they don't grow, and although they don't die, they don't change with the seasons, so they may look out of place. Sometimes, you do have to replace even artificial flowers... they don't grow, and although they don't die, they don't change with the seasons, so they may look out of place. Nobody quite knows what AI does, but it cannot be guaranteed to come up with the appropriate solution every time. OK, real human intelligence is not entirely reliable either, but I still strongly prefer it. I do not knowingly use any artificial intelligence bots, I get on fine with the real thing. ▲ Collapse
