Hi Folks!
Since a few years I used to trust in “Panda Antivirus and Firewall”. A Spanish issue.
Lately I had a heavy problem with a Trojan (Cyberlog-X) which came into my system and that I were unable to get rid off because it’s main characteristic was to slow down the microchip (by numerous pop ups) and cutting off my access to the Web.
So I had to pay a visit to my usual computer shop and witchcraft and there the Great Sorcerer fixed the whole matt... See more Hi Folks!

So I had to pay a visit to my usual computer shop and witchcraft and there the Great Sorcerer fixed the whole matter in less than two hours and for more than 150 bucks. Furthermore he added to my understandable trauma that my Panda was some kind of “kjsbovh fulaks djvshit “ and that this “sfdoihg mthfucksdnfjng” should not be considered neither as an antivirus and neither as a reliable firewall…
Then, he simply deleted my most beloved Panda (its Icon was so cute…) and replaced it by a trial version of (lesser sexy) “Kaspersky 2009”. He added that “the Kaspersky” found a billion viruses in my system and that it was a shame…
He also added some other bad words that I didn’t understood…
I felt very guilty and sorry because in more than 8 years my Faithful Panda never betrayed me so far.
Now, within 8 days, I am afraid that my new “Kaspersky” will show me its dark side of the force and will become rather vulgar by, first of all, asking me some doe to keep on my side…
That’s life I know, but I am worrying about a few points:
- I live in Barcelona and I did remark that the Spanish version of Kaspersky is a little bit weak and fuzzy in its Spanish translation. Then I am wondering if it is “reliable” for the rest of its functions…
- By the way, just a little asking : I suppose that I could download it in French version (my mother tongue) but, I am wondering if it does works when using a Spanish computer… As you may see I am a very keen and sharp computer user…
- Since 3 weeks I performed 4 or 5 complete scanning of my computer and every times I did it, Kaspersky told me that he found a dozen of spying devices… and did not told me if he erased these threats or not...
- Then, why he did not blocked these devices? Most certainly, there is something that I fail to understand about the “anti viruses and firewalls”…
Summarising the whole stuff, I would highly appreciate your friendly opinions and comments about “Kaspersky” which is rather unknown in Spain but considered as “The God of the Ant viruses” by my Computer Witch… and he does not even sell it…
Should I stay with “Panda” or should I switch to “Kaspersky” ?

They have a lousy reputation here, for many reasons. Finding zillions of non-existent viruses is one of those reasons. Another one is bad programming, which causes incompatibility with various security, and even regular productivity software. There were other gross issues, like memory leaks, that have been fixed only in the recent version, can you imagine how many of those are still there?

Also, update your Windows regularly, don't click strange links, don't launch keygens, unless they are on isolated VM, etc.
Anyway, you don't want Russian oil polonium mafia to spy on you, don't you?:-D

But never rely on one software. Check in between other packages. I have used ZoneAlarm, F-secure, Norton and Antivir. All have some strengths and drawbacks.

I don't use any anti virus software. Unless you depend on your daily portion of porn, use file sharing programs etc, I believe that common sense should suffice to keep your computer safe.

Common sense is not enough, you can open perfectly legal, but infected, site and get infected as well. You can catch a worm via local network, you even can get preinstalled malware on your brand new PC. There are numerous situations, when common sense won't help...

Well, I suppose it all depends on how you use the Internet.
I used Notron/Kaspersky in the past, but never received any "real" threat. That is not to say that these programs do not constantly flash and warn you about something. You are constantly being reminded that you are under attack, but the fact remains that I never received anything potentially harmful.

And I've never had a problem. I get a lot of spam messages often containing viruses but Kaspersky informs you immediately to either quarantine or delete the email. My PC has not had a single virus since I started to use this (not the case with Antinorton, which I also found quite intrusive)

I've been using Kaspersky now for about 5 years and I'm very happy. I can't report any of the problems mentioned by colleagues, it works smoothly without interfering in any way.

I have two computers at home and according to your comments I will try to set on Kasperky in one of them and see what's going on.
So far, I still I have a licence for "Panda" (did I told you that it's icon is so cute ?...) valid untill July 2009.
So, in case of problem (rather costly in such issue...) I will keep another solution before hand.
