| | | jyuan_us United States Local time: 22:36 Membro (2005) English to Chinese + ...

Chinese names, generally speaking, are composed of two or three characters. My point is how to understand, for instance, Zhang Xian or Xian Zhang? Two or three characters? What if it's written as Zhang Xi-an, Zhang Xi'an, Xi-an Zhang, or Xi'an Zhang, if the name in question is of three characters? Isn't it more clear-cut?

In Europe, at least in French-speaking parts of Europe, people tend to capitalise all the letters in surnames, to avoid confusion, for example, XI Jinping, or Jinping XI.
I always think it a better solution.

如果是西化的中文名字,比如:Jack Ma (马云), Andy Lau (刘德华),按西式排列法,名在前,姓在后;

As China rises, the events in China and the many actors involved get more and more exposure on the world stage. This is something we can all see in the Western news media and TV programming nowadays. If we pay attention, more and more Chinese names are being reported in news stories in their native form.
So I think we should get with the program, so to speak.
One thing is for certain though. For those living in an English-speaking country, the established practice is to have one's given name - Christian or not - precede one's family name. I really don't see that ever changing.
