Hello, Steve and all
Great discussion!
Like you, I was also wondering about "how to say it in English" as soon as I saw something like this. Thank you for bringing our attentions to it with your great suggestions. I like your suggestions very much, especially the word "splurge".
What came into my mind is “Commodities for the corruptive lifestyle”. Other related words for consideration are "spree" (which is used to describe doing something within a short period of time with outrageous excitement, such as "shopping spree", "killing spree", etc.), and “living corruptively” (I was inspired by the expression "living dangerously").
As you may see, the challenge in translating such expressions is how to reflect in the translation the layer of the unique social phenomenon that is happening in China. The young people have mixed feelings of mocking, imitating, and joking with the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule in exposing and denouncing such lifestyle. As Xiaoping pointed out, it is a love and hate feeling.

I agree, Kevin. It's a challenge to find an exact English equivalent that conveys the conflicting love-and-hate mentality and meaning of 腐败 used this way.
Besides what you suggested, "decadence" is also a word I can think of. It's not too condemning, plus people use it to describe self-indulgent extravagant behavior in consumption sometimes. The phrase "live life in the fast lane" may be another possibility ...

Yes, the word "decadent" is used quite often jokingly and not necessarily in a derogatory way. As a matter of fact, the usage is probably very similar to the way 腐败 is used in this sense.

Companies exported contaminated wheat gluten, rice protein
Associated Press
Updated: 11:31 p.m. CT May 8, 2007
BEIJING - Managers from two companies which exported contaminated wheat gluten and rice protein blamed for the deaths of dogs and cats in the United States have been detained, state media reported Wednesday.
...
“The two companies illegally added melamine to the wheat gluten and rice protein in a bid to meet the contractual demand for the amount of protein in the products,” the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, was quoted as saying in a statement by Xinhua News Agency.
...
Xuzhou Anying managers have said they have no idea how the melamine got into the gluten, which they say was sourced from other firms and sold to a third company that exported it to the U.S.
However, suspicions were raised when the company was found to have posted an advertisement on the Web site of online market place 999ce.com in March seeking to buy melamine.

Didn't get it, so dug on. Found this in Wikipedia to share with those who are as in the dark as I was:
Norman Percevel Rockwell (February 3, 1894 – November 8, 1978) was a 20th century American painter. ....
......
Many of his works appear overly sweet in modern critics' eyes, especially the Saturday Evening Post covers, which tend toward idealistic or sentimentalized portrayals of American life—this has led to the often-depreciatory adjective Rockwellesque.

[quote]
Norman Percevel Rockwell
Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) is remembered for his heartwarming illustrations of American life that appeared on covers of the "Saturday Evening Post" magazine for many decades. Marked by nostalgia and moral fortitude, the paintings remain popular with collectors.
When people use the expression "as American as apple pie" they could just as well say as American as a Norman Rockwell painting. Rockwell produced cover paintings for the Saturday Evening Post, a major magazine of its day, for several decades. In the process he became nationally renowned. His nostalgic vision and eye for detail brought him enormous popularity. "He created a moral myth in which people were reassured of their own essential goodness," art critic Arthur C. Danto told Allison Adato of Life magazine. "And that is a very powerful thing." Film director Steven Spielberg remarked to Adato, "Growing up, we always subscribed to the Post. He ll] saw an America of such pride and self-worth. My vision is very similar to his, for the most part because of him."
