reduced key set 一般是指 键数被 缩减了的 键盘，这是相对于 传统的 qwerty full-sized keyboard 比较的。所以我觉得作者挑出的例子是有道理的，但评论还没有评到点子上。



举例2 (书中P118)
例句：The keyboard of a laotop, in order to fit within the restricted size profile,
has a reduced key set.
别人的译文：膝上型计算机的键盘为了装配在受限尺寸外型内，具有较小的按键设置。
作者的改译：膝上型计算机的外型尺寸较小，它的键盘按键也比较小。

把 set 翻译成“设置”似乎说明译者的英语基础还不够好。其实，这里的 key set 就是 set of keys，表示一组/套键。

另外，我查了一下 keyset，它有个义项就是：keyboard

所以，我觉得 reduced key set 可以翻译成：缩小的键盘。

a reduced set keyboard typically refers to keyboards that have lesser keys. They don't have the numeric keypad, delete key, forward, backward, up, down arrow keys and all that jazz on the right-hand side.

如果对一门专业/行业没有切实的了解，而且语言水平又不太过关，那么翻译的质量就很难保证了。

这样一来， reduced key set 的确应该翻译成“缩减的键盘”，才算准确。“缩小"也不准确。

仅从这一点小事上，也可以看出来做好翻译不容易！
