Malko dans SAS

français vers anglais Art / Littérature Poésie et littérature
I need an equivalent mystery/detective/spy novel hero that will mean something to Anglo-Saxon readers. This is unfortunately a literary genre about which I am totally ignorant. The context is as follows:

Since I was a great fan of detective stories, it was an opportunity for me to slip into the skin of a private detective like Sherlock Holmes or ***Malko dans SAS***.

The narrator is an African teenager, so it would have to be something very widely read and available. This is short fiction by the way.

TIA for any suggestions :-)

mon mari m'a dit "James Bond" (plus connu que lui...)
suezen Jun 11, 2005:
Sorry Sue. I misunderstood the question. Hercule Poirot, Miss Marples, Dick Tracey, Philip Marlow ...
Non-ProZ.com Jun 11, 2005:
Hi Sue. Thanks I know about Malko, SAS and Grard de Villiers (I can google too ;-) ) but I suspect Malko will mean little to most English readers.

Malko, the hero in the spysex SAS series

Let's say an erotic spy thriller

The equivalent would be an espionnage series based on a CIA or M15 agent with a lot or erotic passages...

The SAS series are more like spysex thrillers - like James Bond with semi-porn passages... Geopolitics, CIA and sex.

Forget the Poireau, Mason and other tame characters - or load them with Viagra and naked bimboes...

agree Paul Hirsh : je prefere San Antonio quand-meme

agree suezen : James Bond could be a good option ... or Austin Powers!

agree jonbroster : How about Modesty Blaise & her side-kick Willy Garvin. They certainly have the thriller aspect, but I really can't think of any well known thriller series in English that has the same level of eroticism as Malko (which I read in German)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "These books sound awful :-(( but I think James Bond is the best solution. Thanks Inspector Cluseau and everyone else for your input :-) "

Philip Marlowe

I think Chandler's Philip Marlowe is probably the only private detective with a similar international reputation to Sherlock Holmes, and thus credible for a presumably francophone African.

But Poirot might also do, as Suezen suggests

sorry to send you Googles again but there are some good ideas here.
I think Philip Marlowe or Sam Spade might be good options personally .... like Philipe Marlowe in The Big Sleep for example.
