I came across this word for the first time today. Interestingly, rather like "Handy" it appears to be an English coinage in German which doesn't exist in English.

There are some English hits for the word(s) on the Internet but they're not terribly convincing. many appear to come from translations, quite possibly ultimately from German.

Would anyone really use "front cooking" in English? Or what would we say instead - if anything? A stir-fry?

I'm afraid I didn't find the meaning at all obvious, particularly not with your suggestion that it might be "stir-fry" in English. Having now googled the term for more information, I would say that Claire's answer hits the mark.

Context isn't relevant to this question. If I has said that the term was "Frontcooking-Gericht" and that it came from a catering contract, would you know the answer? I decided that context was not helpful in this question so it is timewasting to then be asked for context. Frontcooking is frontcooking - the meaning of the word is fairly obvious, it strikes me, and I do not think that the meaning would vary significantly according to context. The question is what terms are used in English? This can best be answered by an expert in the catering/culinary business. If someone fundamentally does not know what a word means no amount of context will make any difference.

I've never come across the term (not even in German). I'm pretty sure we wouldn't use it in English, though. Do you have any more information?

Hi Bill,
Without more context I can't say if this is the same thing, but I was just on vacation in a Spanish hotel that had "show cooking" presentations (paella, what else?). Might be an alternative for you.

front cooking

"Front cooking", meaning cooking in front of the customer, is an established expression in all major flavours of the English language. I have heard it in England, USA, RSA and Australia.

“Front cooking” is English. The expression was “adopted” by the German language as “Frontcooking; Front-Cooking”. It would, against this background, seem logical to me that that one should translate the German “Frontcooking; Front-Cooking” back to the original English “front cooking”, and nothing but “front cooking”.

The whole discussion remind me of poor Manfred von Richthoven who was “Rittmeister”, but after translation from and to German became “Leutnant, Kapitän zur See”, or even worse “Friherre Natt och Dag” returned as "Gräsänklingen levde rajtan-tajtan dygnet runt".

Back translations should produce the original term and nothing else!

thank you for your excellent answer - I have in this case gone for "display cooking" because it seems to me a good alternative translation and one that is more intuitively understandable. But thank you for confirming that "front cooking" is acceptable - I thought it might be an "invented" German coinage, like "Handy"

disagree Nat Shockley : I have to say, I really doubt that this term is very widespread in the English-speaking world. Most of the hits on the internet seem to be in some way associated with Germany or other northern European countries.

tableside cooking

I know this is a very old query, but I just looked up Front-Cooking because I didn't know what it meant, and my wife (who has worked in restaurants all her life) said this is what she would call it.
