It seems to me that there has to be a better way than "vitl functions" but it doesn't come to me.

"Life-threatening" is always a problem when translating into Spanish. I think "deterioro de funciones vitales" has been devised as a way out.

Most of the Spanish equivalents of "life-threatening" use the word "vital". Here are some examples: urgencias vitales/situaciones de riesgo vital/que comprometen la vida/que entrañan riesgo vital, and so on.
