The link I've given you also suggests 'compere', but I'd say that's more commonly used in cabaret and other show-type events. I wouldn't use it for e.g. a wedding

I think that if, or when, use the acronym, it should ib fact be without the full stops - not M.C. but MC. I'm sorry about that.
