English term or phrase: pitch
"The CEO, HR and finance directors often have different agendas and views, and we need to understand these well before entering the pitch....For major pitches, this may be a case of deciding not to participate - or deciding to leave the pitch process early..."

I am not sure how to translate "pitch" in French in this context as this word has so many meanings in English...

soumettre une offre
Explanation:
A "pitch" is "un terrain", usually a sports-pitch.
To "pitch for something" is to make an offer or a proposal, in answer to a tender for example.

Here, the word "pitch" is used in the second context. Therefore, I would translate the whole sentence as follows:

"Le pdg et les directeurs des RH et des finances ont des agendas différents et des points de vue, et nous devons bien les comprendre avant de soumettre notre offre... Pour des offres importantes, cela peut aller jusqu'à la décision de ne pas participer - ou de se retirer avant l'heure..."

disagree  Tony M: I don't think that's the meaning here, J. That is the slightly pejorative meaning, like 'sales spiel', whereas here Ibelieve it is 'make a pitch for sthg' = make a bid.

-> I know, your perception of getting into the market (with a bid) seems the idea.

argumentaire de vente

Explanation:
I think the term you've found is probably the right one for the context as I understand it here (as long as 'vente' is appropriate; one might also 'make a pitch' (or bid) for internal budget allocations, for example...)

But I would steer clear of translating 'enter' literally; could you not say 'lancer notre / un argumentaire de vente...'?

neutral  Martin Cassell: argumentaire, to me, is more the content of the "pitch", or presentation; whereas the various occurrences in the context given seem more focussed on the _process_ of preparing and submitting a bid (pitching) // (or indeed not pitching, as you say!)

-> Thanks, Martin — yes, I think you're probably right. Tho' then again, the decision 'not to participate...' might suggest otherwise...

Explanation:
without knowing the differing ideas of those responsible (directors etc.) we are well advised to leave the pitch alone. That´s how interpret the sentence
