French term

moteur d'indexation

French to English Science Telecom(munications) software application (EDM)
The glossary does not help and I only vaguely understand the role of these engines. Am also concerned about the use of the verb later on ('indexant un format')...any help out there ?

"Aujourd’hui, l’information documentaire est disponible à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur de l’entreprise, sous différents modes :

Discussion

ormiston (asker) Nov 12, 2008:
note to Charlie Charlie - am not at ease in this field for sure, but am wary of the number of Google hits being gospel, and am hoping here to reach out to those who 'know' !
Gurudutt Kamath Nov 9, 2008:
Index engine for various file formats ces moteurs indexant divers formats (PDF, Office, HTML, texte) = these engines index various file formats (PDF, Office, HTML, text). Microsoft prefers "index engine" (search engine is preferred to searching engine). Mercifully, Google search also shows a vastly higher count for index engine (41,000) to indexing engine (33,500 or so).
rkillings Nov 9, 2008:
'across various formats' Try using a preposition if 'index' + dir. obj. 'formats' bothers you. (But it shouldn't.)
Charlie Bavington Nov 8, 2008:
Eh? That "disagree" word in red would tend to indicate that you did, in fact, disagree with MM's answer :-).
Anyway, just wanted to point out to Ormiston, who on the face of it would appear not to be over-informed, that google can be your friend if you want to know "which is more used" AND that you can connect to various country-specific googles (google.co.uk, google.ca, etc.) to check usage in a specific country.
ormiston (asker) Nov 8, 2008:
to Mediamatrix - I appreciate that a format cannot be indexed (partly why I posted the question, am no expert). I'd go for your 'indexer' but how express the second mention, grammatically - is the French odd ?
Rimas Balsys Nov 8, 2008:
'indexing engine' vs 'index engine' I really don't think it matters in the least. I worked on IT projects for a large multinational in the UK and we used 'indexing' (it's also the Govt of Canada accepted translation) but as I say I can't imagine it would matter in the least. Also, in answer to 'mediamatrix', again, this is no big thing, I wasn't disagreeing with m's answer, just - as m said - splitting hairs.
ormiston (asker) Nov 8, 2008:
clarification this is where experts can save us time! thank you Rimas, so you are confident one can 'index a format' ?. Also, I have found both 'index engine' and 'indexing engine' - which is more used ?

Note from asker:
the client confidently assures me the term is 'indexation engine'. Sounds awful to me and I wonder why I bother bothering you all. I do appreciate all the help and explanations
Peer comment(s):

agree Gurudutt Kamath : Fully agree. The Oracle link is terrific. However, the confusion about "indexing a format" is likely to remain if one does not understand the document. Because, what the indexing engine does is to index the contents of various file formats (NOT formats)

It is obvious from the context that it is the 'content' that is indexed, regardless of which of the mentioned formats is being used to 'wrap up' that content. And note that both the French, and my suggested translation in English, assume the same degree of awareness of the subject-matter on the part of the reader.

Strictly speaking, you are splitting hairs that don't even exist in native (UK) English.
