Although I haven't had time to do in-depth research, this term seems to be used a bit, and certainly is referring to the right component of the tripod.

It is the roughly triangular and more or less flat part at the top to which the legs are hinged, and which serves to connect the legs to the actual head part. For strength, this (frequently cast) part is often made of a different material than the actual legs, which might add 'hidden' weight — e.g. to keep the 'overall weight' down (= an important sales argument) , the weight of a sturdier 'canopy' could be compensated by skimping on the gauge of ali used for the legs.

: No, the canopy does not refer to either the tripod as a whole, or just the head part of it; it is a specific element (of the legs section)

Le mot "canopy" peut indiquer un ciel de lit (pas le cas!), un dais (non plus), une voûte (peut-être), une verrière, une coupole... le strate supérieur de la forêt... Dans le texte en question, vu le sujet, je pense que 'coupole" pourrait convenir.
L'anglicisme 'canopée' est une possibilité... 'Capote', pourquoi pas? Il faut un peu de conjecture...
