Spanish term

involución

Spanish to English Science Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) evolutionary biology
I am trying to translate the word "involución," which I understand is a process related to atavism, into English in a book about Darwin and the theory of evolution. I am not sure whether "involution" or "regression" is the corresponding term in Darwinian theory.

Discussion

Nicholas Callaway (asker) Apr 16, 2009:
Maybe not "regression" after all Member Paulina Gómez informed me that in Darwin's original text, "involution" is in fact the term he commonly uses: "In his works i.e. The Origin of the Species,
the term consistently used by Darwin himself was
"involution", without any esoteric connotation. He was
specifically refering to a concept which is complementary, and which is part of and allows evolution. I mean, evolution
implies involutionary processes, for the sake of achieving
higher complexity (It is consistent with the latin root of
the word, also meaning "involvement" or like a coiling
movement or growth. The problem lies in that in
Spanish the meaning of the word "involución" is more narrow
that in English and always refer to a regression or backward
or decaying movement. The Darwinian use of the term was
broader."

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I agree with using "regression"; it seems that "involution" is, in English, a term used mostly in New Age circles."

In the present context we need to understand the difference and differentiate between the two; Evolution is wanting, Involution is accepting. Evolution means feeding one's greed, involution means recognising others need. Evolution traps us in the outer noise; involution helps us listen to our inner voice. Evolution is to analyse, involution is to realise. Evolution feeds the ego, Involution frees the spirit. Evolution adds to arrogance, Involution leads to acceptance.

Finally, evolution applauds the “Survival of the fittest”, Involution believes in “Being provided for from the nest”.
