Arabic term or phrase: مدني
This is a follow-up to the question I asked the other day about the word اهلي

This text is about the role of civil society organizations of the Palestinian society inside Israel. I have been translating the phrase المجتمع اهلي as "civil society." However, the author is making a distinction between المجتمع الأهلي and المجتمع المدني that I don't quite understand, as in the following:
الإنتقال من المجتمع الأهلي ٳلى المجتمع المدني لا تزال بعيدة

Are we talking about a move from "civil" society to "civilized"? Any insight you can provide about the connotations would be very helpful.

civil
Explanation:
Author is talking about the shift from a "nationalist" based society to a "civil" based society, I don't think he is talking about a civilized society as you are alluding. I hope this helps you more.

I found your explanation most helpful for making the distinction, though I still wasn't sure about "nationalist" for أهلي. Thank you for your help!
