absolutely wrong it is.the translation will then mean diploma in physician assistant which only downgrades the person to a Nurse, midwife, auxilary nurse, staff nurse etc position but certainly not a Medical Doctor. Thanks!
...whether anything comes after "medico" (for example, a specialism). And if the source country calls this a diploma, why is it compulsory to translate to "degree" just because that is the norm in the US and the UK? The reader needs to grasp this is about a South American country where things are not the same. So I would opt for "diploma" - it cannot be "wrong" since that is exactly what the text says.
I think we do indeed have to give the best possible, acceptable and understandable (not to say correct) rendering of the term for the target culture .. and this is a great subject to be discussed :)
So are we going to call it a diploma or a degree?? Why must we slavishly "convert" terms to what they would be in our own countries? it's a question that I keep on challenging translators with. Of course I KNOW that you can't get a diploma to be a doctor in the US or the UK, but does that matter if the Spanish (presumably from Argentina) actually says diploma?
