Компьютеры: Программное обеспечение
I'm proofreading a translation of help files for anti-virus software. The word упаковщик is used several times, and the translator translated it "compressed file", but I'm pretty sure the word shouldn't mean a compressed file, but rather something that is used to compress files. What is the most appropriate English term for this? Here is an example of how it is used in the text:
Чтобы скрыть опасные программы от обнаружения антивирусом, злоумышленники упаковывают их с помощью специальных упаковщиков или многократно упаковывают один объект.

Comment: "I wasn't sure "packer" was a valid computer term, but the links you and Fernsucht provided reassured me that it was. Thanks!"

archiver
or archive program

: No, it's not archiving at all. The virus remains very much active. There is no index, search or restore facility. In short, no archiving functionality but a lot of other kind.

No, they're NOT the same thing.

Scrambler
I believe that's what they mean here.
The reason is that they don't really want to pack their virus or warm to reduce its size or to store/archive it in a more efficient way. What they are doing it for is to cover its tracks, make it hard to detect. For instance, such scramblers often re-arrange parts of the code so that it no longer matches known signatures. This can actually increase the result size.
In fact, "упаковщик" in Russian doesn't necessarily mean that the result is smaller, just that it's packed nicely. With enough packing materials used, resulting package also can very well be larger than the original size.
