German term

Blindrille

German to English Art/Literary Architecture Architectural drawings
This is from a book about the history of architectural drawing.

In other words, this was the original design, created by trial and error on the parchment, rather than a copy.

Zirkeleinstichpunkte are compass holes, but I can't work out what Blindrillen are. Blind creases, perhaps - but this means nothing to me, and Googling hasn't helped. Can anyone provide any insights, please?

Discussion

Helen Shiner Mar 28, 2012:
yes to 'scored lines' or scoring. Probably done with some form of burin or bodger.
Stephen Reader Mar 28, 2012:
scoring, scored lines (blank, etc., scoring) w/Helen as @ your ans., H., only an addendum: at <http://www.scribd.com/doc/17821606/Architect-Drawings-World-... I meant search at 'search within document', bottom of screen, not the trans-docum. search at top. Wondered about 'embossing' but that's raised rather than intaglio (& intaglio cd be useful even tho' used specifically in printmaking/etching). 'Scoring' (etc.) avoids such complications! (Note: several Javascripts have to be allowed for that site to work, all harmless sic WOT).
Helen Shiner Mar 28, 2012:
Hi Phil I would have thought that these are lines 'indented', if you like, into the parchment but which did not cut through it. Not drawn but created by grooving somehow.

groove-like line

Here's an explanation of "Blindrille" I've found:

That looks perfect. Thanks very much.

neutral Helen Shiner : Though I don't think 'groove-like' is great. They are grooves/It is scoring./But useful ref.

I think scored or incised lines even gets the point across. I would have thought they would have been made by the architect's / mason's tools of the trade. Clarissa's ref confirms.

See contemporary use of stylus or 'hard point' in illuminated manuscript production:

Hard Point - a stylus made of metal or bone used for Ruling, leaving lightly scored lines on the parchment that guided the scribe's hand in laying text down in straight lines across the page. Sometimes used to inscribe the outlines of a drawing. Also see Lead Point.

Note from asker:
Thanks, Helen. I had an idea it was something like this, but I didn't know what created the marks.
Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Reader : esp. w/ scoring since cf. native-Eng. usage, <http://www.scribd.com/doc/17821606/Architect-Drawings-World-...>, enter search term 'scored' there. Thx to Clarissa for point of dep. for Eng-lang. search. / Thx, Helen, +1 gloss to coll.! S

Thanks, Stephen, not easy to do so from my phone, but glad you've found useful ref for Phil. I think scoring best, too./You might be interested in my last link particularly.
