Skimming stones
I used to go skimming stones when I was young. This is what we would say in England at least

: or skipping stones - both seem to be widely used. I'm not sure of there is a UK-Murcan divide?

I'd really avoid 'skipping' as for many anglophones, it has a different meaning (jumping across a river from stone to stone) Also 'skippng stones' can be taken as the noun (the stones used to cross over on by skipping.

: David : 'skipping stones' to cross a stream sounds off to my GB ears. 'Stepping stones' would come to mind first. In my England, we used to say "skipping stones" or "skimming stones".

to translate 'des ricochets': 'ducks and drakes'.
La chanson parle d'un enfant qui rêve de voir assez d'eau pour pouvoir faire des ricochets.
Mais il faut garder le FR : Des ricochets ("ducks and drakes")

: ducks and drakes is an expression which means to waste ones life away - not really the mssage here. // Yes, Cyril, it is a name for "skipping stones" - but the phrase immediately evokes another image which will color the way it is heard - see your url.
