Russian term

резервировать мощность / резервирование мощности

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation grid operation
Речь, в нескольких местах по тексту, об энергосистеме, опирающейся на единственный крупный энергоисточник, при отстутствии резервных мощностей. При нештатных ситуациях запрос о подаче эквивалентной мощности из соседней энергосистемы возможен, но не гарантирован. Описывается ситуация, в которой необходимо гарантированное резервирование мощности, эквивалентной мощности имеющегося энергоисточника, собственными силами или во внешних системах.

The Misha, thank you for the suggestion. The problem is, firstly, that I frequently need the verb for резервировать - along the lines of requesting/ ensuring the availability of/ paying for / backing up - thank you, Jim - reserve capacity (service) from neighboring grids (while the problem of having no reserve capacity on hand within the system is also described). Secondly, peaking plants (peakers) are a subclass, if you will - capacities that take care of peak loads (as opposed to base-load cases, for instance). Here, should this one plant shut down unexpectedly, its entire capacity is lost to the system. That said, I am indeed looking for synonyms to "reserve capacity" - in the very broadest sense.

This is totally out of my area of expertise but we in the States routinely refer to those "reserve" power sources as peak load generators or plants. Maybe you could use that.

to back up or reserve power / backup or reserve power

I'm most comfortable with "backup" power (as an adjective); as a verb, either "back up" or "reserve" should convey the idea

power redundancy/redundant capacity

Available Redundant Capacity is the term used in power planning that customers may not know, but they do ask for it daily. What they ask is, “Where can I safely add new IT equipment without overloading and potentially bringing down my facility?” Calculating ARC is the answer.
