The consultation highlighted the urgent need for data on the clinical significance of low concentrations of folate and vitamin B12 in non-pregnant individuals who have no evidence of other haematological changes, because studies at that time failed to detect any obvious impairment of health. It should be noted that folate levels defined as “elevated” were based on the assay’s upper limit capabilities **without dilutions**, and not on biological implications for health.
