characteristic recruitment pattern (on the EEG)
When checking for epilepsy we look for "recruitment" of electrical activity - the process of abnormal brain waves inducing similar abnormal waves in adjacent neurons.
From its use in the two places in the source text, I think that critique is being used with the meaning of "characteristic (of an epileptic pattern)".
The physician notes that the chewing movements recorded by the jaw sensor do not coincide with brainwave features characteristic (of epilepsy). One concludes from this that the chewing movements were not due to epilepsy.
I do not read EEGs but the technique described here is similar to what we do with EKG Holter monitors, in which we try to correlate the patient's reported sensations with the corresponding electrocardiogram patterns to see if the sensations are coming from the heart.

Thanks Souad. It is true that I do not care about my total point count but I try to make every answer a winner. ;-)

Note from asker:
Dear Michael, Thank you very much for the clear and detailed explanation. I attempted to select your answer to grade it but somehow I am unable to do so. There is at the bottom of my screen a note with "Error on page". I mentioned this problem to ProZ support team and they just answered that they cannot reproduce the problem so my inquiry is closed without being fixed. I do not know how to give you the points without waiting for other people to confirm your answer and in 2-weeks time it becomes automatic. I know that you do not care about points but I want to convey how much I appreciated your answer. Souad |

Then follows what I already posted above.
