French term

pose à claire voie

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Wall and roof cladding
This is a method of attaching slates to roofs. I have found several references but no translation. It seems to refer to a type of laying slates in a staggered way. I even have a drawing and have found another illustration at http://www.eternit.be/fr/~/media/4EAE91025A824BFAB9ECADC5E23...
Traditionally, slates are laid with an overlap along the whole width of the slate but this method seems to provide for an overlap at the edges.
As usual, any help appreciated.
Proposed translations (English)
5 open slating
4 staggered butt style
3 Cribwork cladding style

Discussion

Clive Jones (asker) Feb 18, 2014:
Pose à claire voie My thanks to Madame Dequoi, Kashew, Oliver Toogood and Alexander (who sent me a message directly so I cannot award him points). I have gone with "open slating" based on the drawings and further explanations in the text. Thanks to all for their input.

Pictures of the ''ragged" and "sttagered' style in the link below show that their not l"à claire voie".
Claire voie means a continuous "free" passage since the rain cascades down vertically through the layers.

Note from asker:
Many thanks. I didn't go with "cribwork" because I believe it is not a term used in the UK. Many thanks for the suggestion

staggered butt style

Note from asker:
Thanks for your imput. I went with "open slating" because the drawings I had did not show a butted style - in fact quite the contrary because the slates were overlapped.
