pipeline construction
From a work safety document connected with the construction of a pipeline.
"Sulle tubazioni posate verranno applicati dei cavi P.E, previo asportazione parziale di rivestimento"
and later
"Una volta portati i cavi P.E. fuori terra verranno poi posizionati gli armadi e le piantane P.E., previa esecuzione in opera di basamenti in cls per preparare il tutto al successivo cablaggio all’interno degli stessi."
The document also makes reference to a "tecnico P.E." who will be carrying out some of the work.
Does anybody know what the P.E. means?
I wonder if it might stand for protezione elettrica, meaning protezione catodica, but I have some doubts.
Thanks if anyone can help!

PE cables
It is data cabling. PE stands for "polyethylene," the insulation.
In English you can see it here:
http://www.elandcables.com/documents/CAT6 PE Cable.pdf
and you can compare pictures of Italian adverts for "cavi p.e." here:
http://italian.alibaba.com/goods/pe-cable.html
and see that they are the same thing.

Discussion
I'm hoping to provide as much context and thought process as I can, so that the question and its context will be clear to translators who view this page.
I had thought about polyethylene, but that means the tecnico P.E. is a "polyethylene technician". "Tecnico cavi" would seem more logical if that's what it means. Same for the "armadi e piantane P.E." They could be made of polyethylene, but you wouldn't really call them that, would you?
Additionally, polyethylene is usually pe without the dots, which makes me think that P.E. in this context means something else.
