Comment: "Thanks very much for your reply. You're right, the sentence reads more like a description from a novel than a technical report. I liked the idea of a carpet of vegetation as I have since changed "eliminated" to "worn away" which is exactly the type of wear and tear you'd expect of a carpet. I wish however I could give some points to Skinner's "ground cover" as I think this would also be a very good term if I wanted to keep the sentence sounding technical."

Sounds like the sorts of low-growing plants that may or may not survive being trampled by visitors (here in Washington, for example, mazus stands up well to moderate traffic, while other things wither away much faster). The point: having ground cover along a path makes it look nice; but as people use it, the look is spoiled from wear.

In the text, "tapis vegetal" refers to the open spaces of vegetation... grass. I'd translated rather as organic carpet since vegetable carpet, plant carpet, o carpet of vegetation suggest the people are stepping on vegetation when the probable case is that it's just grass.
