SPAIN. There are several entries in the glossaries for "matriz/matrices", but none of them help me understand this specific use of "matrices". Normally I'd expect it to mean something like "aqueous solutions" or "water samples"...

aqueous matrices
Explanation:
According to the search below it seems like matrix/matrices is the term used in English for chromotography (assuming that is the subject involved here based on your other question):

in aqueous solutions

Explanation:
I think it's just a convoluted way of saying it..... as you yourself guessed. But I wouldn't use "water samples"

It is strange, but a solution can simply be considered as a matrix (the dissolved material contained within a matrix of highly mobile solvent molecules, i.e. water molecules if an aq. soln.).

Unless they're doing high-spec protein analysis it's almost certainly aq. solns.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Cheers. It's mainly water samples that this organisation analyses. I'm still baffled by this use of "matrices" though, which doesn't seem to correspond to any of the definitions in my DRAE.
