Data from the FAP World Transplant Registry has documented a decline in time from symptom onset to transplant from 5.7 (±3.6) years at the time liver transplantation was first performed for this disease (1990-1994), to 3.2 (±2.2) years in the 2005-2008 time interval.
It is important to note that this is time from symptom onset, and not time from diagnosis, which can be approximately 3.7 to 4 years later (Plante-Bordeneuve, 2007; Sousa, 1995).
These data demonstrate that patients undergo liver transplantation as soon as a match is available following definitive diagnosis.
Wait times for liver transplantation are decreasing because patients are enrolled on liver transplantation lists when diagnosed to ensure transplantation is performed as early as possible, and because of the domino liver procedure, which utilizes the ATTR-PN patient’s liver as a donor organ for a patient suffering from hepatic disease.
