On dit accrocher une cible dans le langage militaire mais ce n'est pas du langage courant.
Note from asker:
Thank you for this answer. I am a bit surprised that this term does not occur on google.fr at all except with the meaning of crashing or bumping into another car. Is there not perhaps a more specific term to differentiate it from this latter meaning?
Thank you for this answer!

capter le véhicule

I think in this sense, an 'asset' = 'an item of property'. But I feel it would be better in FR to call it a 'vehicle', if that's what it is.

And I believe 'lock on' here is a verb, meaning presumably to lock the tracking device onto one particular vehicle so it can be tracked; just as a homing missile will 'lock on' to its target.

'capter' is in the sense as used in aviation, radar, ATC, etc. when you 'lock on' to the target you wish to track, etc.
