German term
von je 6 auf 12 Zentimeter Kantenlänge
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Construction / Civil Engineering
This is from a magazine article about a couple who built their own summerhouse.
There are two words I don't understand in this phrase, but I hope you'll agree that it wouldn't make sense to submit them as two separate questions.
I don't see what the function of "auf" is, and I don't know what "Kantenlänge" is. Obviously it literally means "edge length", and that's what all the dictionaries say, but I can't visualise how it fits with the rest of the phrase.
Thanks!

NZS 3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings sets out how to size rafters in table 10.1.
:
Step 5 – Rafter size
Read the rafter size in the left column of Table 10.1 for the 2.2 m span chosen. This indicates a 140 × 45 mm rafter size.
http://www.buildmagazine.org.nz/articles/show/sizing-rafters...
The maximum spans in the table above are for the horizontal distance the rafter can span (NOT the diagonal distance or actual length of the rafter). So if your house is 26 feet wide and the roof ridge beam is centered on the house, you will need a rafter that can span 13 feet. Let's use this example and find a size of rafter that will work. Looking through the center of the table, we can find a couple of options. The table states that 2 X 6 rafters spaced 16 inches on center (o.c) can span a maximum distance of 13 feet 5 inches. Another option are 2 X 8 rafters spaced 24 inches o.c.

R804.3.2.1 Minimum roof rafter sizes.
Roof rafter size and thickness shall be determined in accordance with the limits set forth in Tables R804.3.2.1(1) and R804.3.2.1(2) based on the horizontal projection of the roof rafter span. For determination of roof rafter sizes, reduction of roof spans shall be permitted when a roof rafter support brace is installed in accordance with Section R804.3.2.2. The reduced roof rafter span shall be taken as the larger of the distance from the roof rafter support brace to the ridge or to the heel measured horizontally.
For the purpose of determining roof rafter sizes in Tables R804.3.2.1(1) and R804.3.2.1(2), wind speeds shall be converted to equivalent ground snow loads in accordance with Table R804.3.2.1(3). Roof rafter sizes shall be based on the higher of the ground snow load or the equivalent snow load converted from the wind speed.

I do prefer "size" and would avoid "edge length", as this refers to a square in geometry.

Note from asker:
Thanks, though as I said, I don't think "edge length" is right. |

Thanks, Wendy. That possibly supports Bernd's suggestion. |
Discussion
It might be less common in other parts of Germany but here in the South it is more than normal to say "6 auf 12" when you read "6 x 12".
This seems to be a gable roof with 6/12 cmm rafters and plywood roof sheathing.
Have a great evening,
Bernd
