PS：手头在翻译的另一篇文章正好又出现了disrupting（即“颠覆”）。

Threat is the maw. This sentence is a metaphor. Threat is the "gaping" maw. 是什么样的“maw” 呢？ “of disruption" 是修饰片语，界定“maw” 的性质。就像“This is a letter of invitation." 一样：这是一封信，而“of invitation” 是修饰“letter”的片语。
如果你能掌握的这句话是隐喻，就会认同“破坏性深渊”等是切题的。
如果你将它当成平铺直言，当然就只能用直译的方式把它当作 “血盆大口”或“巨大”的颠覆。
另外，"an awful lot of people" 里面的 “a lot of" 是量词。就像 ”two cups of coffee"里的 “two cups of" 一样。量词是修饰名词的数量， 不是独立的名词单位。

@jyuan_us: I really don't see the similarity between your example and 'is a gaping maw of disruption'. Maw is definitely a noun here. However, 'a lot' is always a phrase used as adj. I'm afraid that putting 'awful' between 'a' and 'lot' does not make 'lot' here a noun at all.

您说的完全正确。我举的例子本来就是想说明您的这个说法有失偏颇：
名词 + IS + 名词的结构，它表达的意思是 名词A=名词B, 不能把做表语的名词B翻译为形容词。
具体的翻译要看具体的语境，不应拘泥。我的译法是想象自己面临a gaping maw时的感受以后想出来的。虽然我本人完全不担心AI会带来坏的结果。

disturbtion这个字的字面意思是扰乱，进而引申为“颠覆”（其实这个词作“颠覆”使用，在如今非常普遍），它与“恐惧”或“畏惧”无关。
the potential threat of AI is a gaping maw of disruption字面直译的话，应该估计就是“人工智能的潜在威胁就是巨大的颠覆”

@Patrick Cheng 别拿苹果比香蕉好不好？你举例的句子属于不同的句型，而楼主句子的结构是解释“威胁”具体是什么威胁（名词），而不是威胁属于什么性质（形容词）。你提供的答案“其潜在威胁也『让人心存畏惧』”就属于后者，完全不是英文作者的意图。

disruption = 颠覆 我相信按上下文的语境有可能或有必要把 disruption以修辞方式处理为“颠覆”。我相信其他看过文章的人也都能理解，在这篇文章里（特别是在这一段里）并没有提到AI颠覆现代文明之事。它只提到现阶段所造成就业流失的情况。又何来“猛烈颠覆现状？这样的诠释或将“disruption”定义为“颠覆”十分耐人寻味。
