español term

perigastrostomía

español al inglés Medicina Medicina (general) Culture samples to detect pathogens
This term pops up the list of sites to be sampled to culture for different pathogens. It seems be out of context. Where would the sample be taken? During the procedure? Could it be a typo? (I have found several typos in this document already.)

Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Jul 3, 2017:
@ Anne Thank you. That's very helpful.
Anne Schulz Jul 3, 2017:
FWIW, "gastrostomy" in English is used for the procedure as well as the "hole" that comes out of it (which should be a "gastrostoma", strictly speaking). Maybe the Spanish use it in the same ambiguous way.
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Jul 3, 2017:
@ TechLawDC If you read my context carefully, you will see that it is a list of sites from which swabs are taken for culture analysis. All the areas listed are possible sites to be swabbed except for the word "perigastrostomía," which is a procedure, not a body part. So I'm wondering how it fits in with the rest of the context. For example, could it be a sample taken from the stomach? (The clinician would not have access to anything around the stomach, just the contents.) Or is it taken during the procedure? Or is it a typo?
TechLawDC Jul 3, 2017:
What is being swabbed is any of certain locations. What is being swabbed is any of certain locations (or do I misunderstand the question?). Namely, one of such possible locations is a peri-gastrotomal location. In other words, it seems to me that the author intends to describe a location, not a procedure, and the author does not regard the use of the term perigastrostomía as anything unusual or that should cause the reader to hesitate.

gastrostomy

(The "peri" would seem redundant, and I have not seen it in English to describe the procedure itself. Rather, "peri-gastrostomy" is seen as an adjective to describe a phenomenon occurring around the gastrostomy, such as an infection.

Location: At a peri-gastrotomal site. (Please somewhat ignore the preceding discussion.)
Note from asker:
Thanks, but I'm looking for how it fits my particular context. "Peri" would refer to area being swabbed, but my question is *what is being swabbed* .
