English term

Victorian pile

English to Polish Art/Literary Architecture Antiques
Cała zagwozdka z moim tekstem leży w grze słów. Jak podaje Oxford, a pile to także "A large imposing building or group of buildings: ‘a Victorian Gothic pile’" - a z kontekstu wynika, że chodzi o wielki, ale stary i zaniedbany dom, czyli nobliwą kupę (pile) gruzu. Tu cały dłuższy fragment, z którym się muszę rozprawić:

"He’d seen homes like that before. Many times. They were what he’d heard referred to during his time at Christ’s College, Cambridge as Victorian piles. Quite descriptive, he’d always thought. And Quebec, notably Montreal, boasted its share of piles, built by the Scottish robber barons, of railway, booze and banking money. They were held together with hubris, a short- term binder at best since many of them had long ago been torn down or donated to McGill University, which needed another Victorian monstrosity like it needed the Ebola virus."

The Victorian pile is a wreck, and I do not feel much better myself.

pile
(mainly humorous) a large building: They've got a great big Victorian pile somewhere out in the country.

pile
You can refer to a large impressive building as a pile, especially when it is the home of a rich important person. "...some stately pile in the country."

4 hrs

podupadły wiktoriański kolos (na chwiejnych nogach)

Nothing more sad than a dilapidated collosus on wobbly legs. OK, wobbly legs were added for dramatic efect, but it makes it easier for it to fall on its face.
