Though I can't find any references to "gousses" in relation to quartz, they seem to mean nodules. Though it could mean geodes, the latter are hollow inside, which is not what "gousses" suggests.

According to https://www.desertusa.com/desert-prospecting/geode.html "The only difference between a geode and a nodule is that a geode has a hollow cavity, and a nodule is solid." However, I believe you know more about the subject than I do.
