Italian term
polidspnea
Italian to English
Medical
Medical: Health Care
physical examination
The context is a child suffering from bronchospasm and among the symptoms there was polidispnea, low O2 saturation and she required oxygen therapy.
I am just wondering if polidispnea can be translated as simply "Dyspea" as I can't seem to find the correct meaning for polidispnea.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

polypnea and dyspnea
From the (few) existing Italian references for this term, I take it that polidispnea is a combination of polypnea (respiration enhanced in terms of both volumes and frequency) and dyspnea (labored breathing). I am not sure if the combination term is used in English, it does not seem so.

Same as liz, I first considered "severe dyspnea". The following references led me to the conclusion it is probably more like poly/dyspnea:
In http://www.istitutoupledgeritalia.it/UI/pages/it/articles/A/... "grave polidispnea" is mentioned. Could be "very/extremely severe dyspnea", but...
https://www.lucaguarda.it/articoli/25.pdf describes an infant with "cianosi periferica (Sat. T. O2 89% in aria ambiente con risalita al 97% con una Fi O2 del 30%), polidispnea (f. r. 64 atti/min.) e tachicardia (f. c. 168 batt./min.)", that is, enhanced respiratory rate is used to characterize 'polidispnea'.

This sounds like the right translation, thank you very much. |

tachypnea
I think what's meant is "polypnea" - rapid breathing. While the medical condition described here may not precisely match yours, I think tachypnea is what is meant in your text.
"Bronchiolitis is diagnosed clinically based on history and physical examination. The disease can be recognized from clinical signs and symptoms, starting with several days of upper respiratory symptoms of mild rhinorrhea, cough, and fever followed by tachypnea, wheezing and increased respiratory effort. Physical examination should include respiratory rate and such evidence of increased work of breathing as retractions, nasal flaring, and grunting. Auscultation will typically reveal wheezes or inspiratory crackles as a result of inflammation and epithelial debris in the airway."

Note from asker:
Thank you for your input, however tachypnea is described as abnormal rapid breathing, whereas dyspnea is shortness of breath. I think that, since 'poli' literally means multiple, polidisnpea may simply mean multiple episodes of dyspnea, which is the translation I think I will go with. Thanks again |

: Mind that any source quoting "polydspnea" in context with thirst/polyuria may well be mixing up polydyspnea and polydipsia. - lol Sorry, no offense meant :-)) But, thirst causing dyspnea, does that make sense??

Discussion
I found this mention of polidispnea online: "... diminuita ventilazione polmonare, diretta conseguenza del trauma toracico: la polidispnea tipica di questi pazienti è infatti la chiara espressione di un lavoro respiratorio aumentato e poco redditizio ai fini del ricambio di O2, ..." This is from an article on sternal fractures; maybe it will offer a clue.
This is a tough term to find, and I haven't been able to find even an Italian definition. I would think it means something different from just "dyspnea" however.
