Hello, this is a website for clinical treatments and purchase of -products over the web,
in a section "hinzufügen" I find the following, which I translated with "Mengenrabatt"
my pm rejects and says it is "Mengenpreis" - would you let me know your opinion?

"Mengenangebot" It occurred to me that "Mengenangebot" could be a fair compromise.
Under a section heading "Mengenangebot" the seller could reasonably specify either a special price ("Mengenpreis") or a discount ("Mengenrabatt") that would lead to a special price.

Unfortunately the examples I find of its use seem to not necessarily be from native German speakers.

AUDIENCE = SELLER On the other hand, if the website interface under discussion is the part that the seller will be using to "add" (or input/specify/configure) details of the product/servicing offerings to be shown to customers, then the source text makes sense.

For example, eBay has introduced an option for sellers to set a lower price that will apply to larger-volume orders.

If AUDIENCE = CUSTOMER In English it would be strange on a website (or elsewhere) to give the customer the option to add a "volume price". More natural would be to provide an opportunity for customers to "add" (or "apply" or "include") a "volume discount".

Das kommt darauf an, wie die Seite funktioniert. Normalerweise müsste es "Mengenpreis" sein. Wenn man allerdings einen Prozentsatz eingeben muss, ist es ein Mengenrabatt, der den Preis um diesen Prozentsatz verringert. Gibt man einen Preis an, so ist es der Mengenpreis, der je nach Abnahmemenge gestaffelt ist.

Um dies sicher unterscheiden zu können, benötigt man mehr Kontext.

@Christine: As an ENS, I would translate the last line of your post:
"Add volume price and rebate (allowed)". If you add the two together, you arrive at the full, i.e., non-quantity-discounted, price.

It is not so easy to understand this contextual description. However, maybe it means "Preis nach Berücksichtigung eines Mengenrabatts", which is Mengenpreis, really, as I just realised, as a field on a webpage for entering a price can logically never be a Rabattfeld (at least in that respect the PM is right). Maybe you have to try a bit harder when it comes to describing the text situation, providing such description in German, and also provide more context, never mind your NDA. It can be done, it is simply an art in its own right.

Rabat = discount There is a difference between Mengenpreis and Mengenrabat. The latter means a Discount.

neutral B&B FinTrans : Ganz so eindeutig ist es leider nicht. Im Engl. wird "volume price" auch i. S. v. "discount" verwendet, analog auch im Dt. - der Duden etwa definiert "Mengenpreis" als "bei Abnahme einer größeren Menge eingeräumter günstigerer Preis", syn. Mengenrabatt :(

Ja, häufig werden die Begriffe synonym verwendet, obwohl oben beschriebener ganz klarer Unterschied besteht. Wie bei so vielen Ausdrücken. Trotzdem ist ein Preis kein Rabatt.
agree David Moore (X) : IMO, Holger's "neutral" is a total red herring; if you read the discussion entry by A & S Witte, that's almost exactly what they said. Holger qiotes Duden, which IMO is wrong to describe it as "Syn. Mengenrabatt".

Mengenpreis/Mengenrabatt

Im Dt. wird das flexibel gehandhabt, häufig synonym. Auch im Duden stehen beide Begriff synonym hintereinander; Mengenpreis wird als bei Abnahme einer größeren Menge eingeräumter günstigerer Preis definiert. Jacke wie Hose! :-)

Total richtig! Nur weiß ich aus bitterer Wien Energie/ versorgung Erfahrung, daß es sich ev. wie hier beim Mengentarif um einen *Preisaufschlag* und um keine Ermäßigung handeln könnte.
