to me it's a synonym of a license plate number, but there are others who disagree with me in this matter
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

re: plate number is repeated on the sticker It is still the "tag number", not to be confused with a seperate "decal number" as in Florida, or perhaps in your state ...

btw, in Florida you can see two numbers on decal sticker, one is a plate number, another is for the decal itself ...

I see. Yes, the number does refer to the license plate, which is issued when the car if bought (or transferred from another car). But to complicate matters somewhat, the license plate number is repeated on the sticker, where (upon renewal) the new expiration date also appears.
geopiet (asker) Aug 13, 2021:
re: "original question dealt with tag expiration" sorry Frank, but I must disagree with you again ... somehow you've misunderstood the question ..

the Asker in EN<=>PL pair has clearly asked co to jest ten tag number? czy to numer tablic czy jakiś inny?,

which means

what is this "tag number"? is it a plate number, or some other (number)?

here is the link, if someone's interested ...

time changes things good example of what does it but CALL can be literally to raise your voice to CALL out, or Call ON a Store, Call him, go and find the person and talk to them. Store still have signs that say Please Call Again, has nothing to do with a phone.

I knew people who were old enough to remember when Idaho sent out NEW Tags ,with tabs and you put them over the previuos year.
So I would agree with Frank, WHEN Where, Why,
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Aug 13, 2021:
@All: As the culprit responsible for the "I know the local custom" quote, let me explain. The original question dealt with tag expiration.

The problem is that license plates per se do not expire these days. It is the stickers placed in the corner of license plates that expire.

You will find confirmation for the use of "tag" as sticker in many places:
https://www.quora.com/Is-a-vehicle-tag-the-same-as-a-license...
https://vehq.com/car-tags/
https://forum.miata.net/vb/archive/index.php/t-163604.html
https://www.polkcountyiowa.gov/county-treasurer/vehicle-regi...

At one time, in Ohio, we got new plates every year. For many years now, we just get new stickers with renewal.

It may be - and several discussions agree - that the use of tags for license plates and/or stickers may be a question of local semantics.

re: you should post a link to this question will do just that ....

thanks again ...
philgoddard Aug 12, 2021:
Your colleagues are wrong, and you should post a link to this question. Anyone in the US knows what a tag is.
Yvonne Gallagher Aug 12, 2021:
@ Asker it happens quite frequently that wrong answers are chosen, not just by askers, but by the system because of number of "agrees" so don't take it personally. A quick Google tells you it's a synonym for a license plate number
geopiet (asker) Aug 12, 2021:
thank you all for your input There is a question about "tag numbers" in one of the language pairs, one where I posted an answer stating just that; a synonym of a "license plate number"

Unfortunately, there is another answer, saying it is a "license plate decal number", which is wrong, because these decals in Georgia display only "registration expiration date", they are not assigned and do not bear any other numbers.

This answer has also received 2 "agrees", and since the Asker hasn't done anything, it was automatically selected by proz system as the right answer.

I tried to convince my opposing colleague by posting a numerous examples proving my case, but I was dismissed by the statement "I know the local custom"

go figure ... :)
Tomasso Aug 12, 2021:
Tags were once literally small metal tags In the past century, 1940, the plate was metal and one received a small one inch square tag to go over the year, it was attached with small protrusions of the plate, the tabs. Look at https://forum.miata.net/vb/archive/index.php/t-163604.html
Quote,
I have a set of vintage 1949 Oregon license plates. I also have the "tags" or "tabs" that went with them for a few following years. The plates have some slots in them, and the tags are little metal stamped things that say "DEC 50" with a serial number stamped on the side, with little tabs that fit the slots. They cover up the "1949" that is stamped on the plate. These seem to be the predecessors of the modern sticker and I can see why they would be called either tags or tabs, because they are shaped like a tag and they are held onto the plates with tabs that you can bend.
It's a synonym of a license plate number "License plates, also known as vehicle tags, contain an alphanumeric sequence unique to your vehicle."
https://legalbeagle.com/13710014-what-is-vehicle-registratio...

"a plate or tag (as of metal) attesting that a license has been secured and usually bearing a registration number"
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/license plate

In this official website of the State of Georgia
https://dor.georgia.gov/motor-vehicles
click "Tag Renewals" it goes to the page where it shows License Plate field requires License Plate Number.
