to me it's a synonym of a license plate number, but there are others who disagree with me in this matter

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Similarly, in Georgia

btw, in Florida you can see two numbers on decal sticker, one is a plate number, another is for the decal itself ...

the Asker in EN<=>PL pair has clearly asked co to jest ten tag number? czy to numer tablic czy jakiś inny?,
which means
what is this "tag number"? is it a plate number, or some other (number)?
here is the link, if someone's interested ...

I knew people who were old enough to remember when Idaho sent out NEW Tags ,with tabs and you put them over the previuos year.
So I would agree with Frank, WHEN Where, Why,
The problem is that license plates per se do not expire these days. It is the stickers placed in the corner of license plates that expire.
You will find confirmation for the use of "tag" as sticker in many places:

At one time, in Ohio, we got new plates every year. For many years now, we just get new stickers with renewal.
It may be - and several discussions agree - that the use of tags for license plates and/or stickers may be a question of local semantics.
thanks again ...
Unfortunately, there is another answer, saying it is a "license plate decal number", which is wrong, because these decals in Georgia display only "registration expiration date", they are not assigned and do not bear any other numbers.
This answer has also received 2 "agrees", and since the Asker hasn't done anything, it was automatically selected by proz system as the right answer.
I tried to convince my opposing colleague by posting a numerous examples proving my case, but I was dismissed by the statement "I know the local custom"
go figure ... :)
Quote,
I have a set of vintage 1949 Oregon license plates. I also have the "tags" or "tabs" that went with them for a few following years. The plates have some slots in them, and the tags are little metal stamped things that say "DEC 50" with a serial number stamped on the side, with little tabs that fit the slots. They cover up the "1949" that is stamped on the plate. These seem to be the predecessors of the modern sticker and I can see why they would be called either tags or tabs, because they are shaped like a tag and they are held onto the plates with tabs that you can bend.
