Valve
The vertical loss motion in the lever moves the cam plate to the left and into the open position to release the object.
Explanation:
Lag between motion and cam-follower in the in the vertical axis of the mechanism.
At each end of travel, the arm assembly comes to it's stop position, however the handle is able to continue past this position and against the force of a spring. The spring tension keeps the handle and arm assembly fixed together otherwise. This extra movement in one part whilst the other part remains still is what we call 'loss-motion' or 'lost-motion'.

Another name for Loss Motion is "play" or "backlash."
backlash
The lost motion or looseness (play) between the faces of meshing gears or threads.
https://dictionary.university/backlash
The first article in this series examined a pseudo-ideal gear reducer to demonstrate that free play between adjacent parts becomes lost motion.

Lost motion for transmissions is a measurement of the angle of movement in both directions before movement at the input occurs while applying a load at the output, while backlash is the amount by which the width of a gear's tooth space exceeds the thickness of an engaging tooth measured at the pitch circle of the gears.
