Thanks Samuël. My answer should read "carriers" (plural) as well, not "carrier". My glossary entry needs to be used in conjunction with Marco's and Samuël's technical explanations, for anybody looking up the term in the future.

Une réflexion Marco a raison, et flatbed proposé par Conor est correct aussi.
On parle habituellement de porte-engins roues sous plateau et de porte-engins (roues extérieures), la différence est la garde au sol est un peu plus haute et la flexibilité du chargement, plus d'espace et pouvoir aussi charger par le côté, sans être gêné par les garde-boues.

Après peut-être sans certitude ,
s'il y'a besoin de faire la distinction; peut-être flatbed et flatbed deckover
De ce que j'ai pu trouvé il semble que:

-Flat deck trailers are built with the deck between the trailer wheels.
-Deckover trailers have a deck that sits above the trailer wheels.
"While there are different setups for flatbed trailers, the most prevalent style is a deck that sits above the wheels. This provides the largest, flattest load area possible."

Well observed Marco.

What if FA and FR are just random reference codes? Like the 104 and the 208 in the names of the Peugeot cars don't have any particular signification, as far as I know.
There are so many differences between the two models here that it is unlikely that the references refer to any one feature in particular.

We translators get all obsessed about abbreviations, but sometimes they are insignificant and even meaningless.

To Asker Most probably you have already noticed and I am not sure it is significant: The wheels are outside the bed in the FR model and under the bed in the FA model. For this reason the usable width of the latter is larger than that of the former. Also, the trailer bed of the trailer rides higher in the FA model than it does in the FR model. That said, I am unable to relate "FR" and "FA" to these differences.

The only difference I can see between the FR one and the FA one is that the FA one doesn't have any sides and so is a flatbed trailer.

Easier to load with wide loads.

I'm not at all sure, but that's what makes sense to me.

"engins": encompasses things like forklift trucks, JCBs/diggers, cherry pickers, etc.
