Spanish term or phrase: expiración de términos
La libertad del señor XYZ obedece a una cuestión de expiración de términos y no a ninguna absolución judicial.

This seems to be used when someone is still facing charges, but doesn't appear to mean "out on bail' from what I can tell.

Thanks in advance

In general, proceedings must be commenced within six months of the criminal act that is being complained of. There are however many exceptions to this rule.

expiration of the detention period

Explanation:
I'm not entirely sure whether the situation here is that of a suspect who can no longer be held beyond the statutory detention period or that of a statute of limitations (time-bar) on the offense committed.
Given the asker's context, I assume it means the former, i.e., that the suspect can no longer be held beyond the detention period otherwise the police would have to formally charge them.

agree  Adrian MM.: expiration of detention *periods* if need to be renewed every 48 hours etc > ninguna absolución judicial hints at - what in English criminal evidence - would otherwise be a 'tainted acquittal by the court'.
