Discussion

Patrick Arbaut Oct 31, 2022:
@daryo
"we have NO IDEA whatsoever of the overall architecture of this "control system", of the hardware and software involved."

PRESUMING that these "processors" are CPUs in a Windows OS looks to me like a rather rush assumption.

Have a good day

Johannes Gleim Oct 30, 2022:
No doubt Processors are processing units, but not always central processing units; they can also be distributed processing units.

See:

A distributed system is a system whose components are located on different networked computers, which communicate and coordinate their actions by passing messages to one another from any system. …
The terms are nowadays used in a much wider sense, even referring to autonomous processes that run on the same physical computer and interact with each other by message passing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_computing

A distributed control system (DCS) is a computerised control system for a process or plant usually with many control loops, in which autonomous controllers are distributed throughout the system, but there is no central operator supervisory control.

Why are you insisting on Windosws OS? What about Linux OS? The operating system is secondary.
Daryo Oct 28, 2022:
Wait a second ... we have NO IDEA whatsoever of the overall architecture of this "control system", of the hardware and software involved.

PRESUMING that these "processors" are CPUs in a Windows OS looks to me like a rather rush assumption.
Patrick Arbaut Oct 28, 2022:
FPC Oct 28, 2022:
@ Tony Ok, sorry I don't mean to dismiss legitimate questions about the architecture of the system, but the point is, whatever they are and wherever they are located if they're called "local" they can be translated as "locaux". Unless as said there's some other compelling characteristic that calls for a different adjective. Even the English doesn't not tell us much about them except that they're "local" in some sense. I don't know, you're probably right that local and main seem to be located on the same unit, so it sounds odd perhaps.
Tony M Oct 28, 2022:
@ FPC I don't think you should so readily dismiss my question — at a level above 'simplistic', the way we look at 'local' vs. remote' in FR can throw up some curiosities that need careful unravelling.
In any case, asker's ontext here is even more special than that; note their coment below "this is an equipment I/O module; it contains a data interface board; main processor; and local processors"
So it seems that the 'main' and 'local' devices are not geographically separated, which could imply the 'local' processors are simply processing something that is considered 'local'
FPC Oct 28, 2022:
It doesn't matter anyway, with respect to what they're local. They can be called "locaux", "processeurs locaux" and the ambiguity is also translated but the term is correct.

AkretcheFazia (asker) Oct 28, 2022:
Hi Tony; this is an equipment I/O module; it contains a data interface board; main processor; and local processors
Tony M Oct 28, 2022:
@ Asker Depends a bit on the point of view of the writer: are these 'local' processors remote with respect to the system under discussion ('overall control system') — or is the point of view from that of the equipment to which these processors are 'local'?

The invented controller is the combination of: an intelligent interface to a SCSI bus, a multi-port buffer memory manager, a formatter, and a local processor port. With the addition of a few components for the device-level interface, the invented controller along with a buffer RAM, a local processor system, and an optional data separator completes a high performance disk, or other mass storage, controller subsystem.
