Thank you in advance!

In that case your context has done the job for you👍
Landsknecht (asker) Jun 12, 2023:

Yes A very fair point, Ice Scream. This one is more difficult than it first appears.
Christopher Schröder Jun 12, 2023:
Whichever variation is used, you will need somehow to explain what it is, unless clear from the context, because the name on its own conveys very little in English.

Chief guardian's office

And nothing more ornate. This is more likely what you're looking for. But you should have more context in your request to get a better understanding. Preferably a paragraph or sentence.

Do see the more common municipal terms -- 'överförmyndarfövaltning or överförmyndarnämnden? The first is an administrative office (employed civil servants) and the second is a committee of elected politicians appointed by and from the municipal council. These politicians are not guardians in any formal sense of the term, but they oversee the operation of the administrative offices in the 'förvaltningen'. They are not a 'Committee of chief guardians' but rather the more like a municipal oversight committee of the chief guardian's office.

Is your term used in relation to these? Or is it related to some other body that is national or otherwise involved in guardianship issues?

An 'enhet' in this context is usually part of an administrative office, but again, you should offer more context.

Department of Chief Guardians

Well, "överförmyndarnämnd" is the committee of chief guardians, so I am guessting that "överförmyndarenheten" would be "department of chief guardians".

agree SafeTex : I prefer "unit" or "service" but Chief Guradians is correct as I found one of the local units with a page in English

Regional Public Trustee Agency; (E&W: Office of the Public Guardian, Regional Unit)

(US) Senior Surrogate's Court Clerks' Division.

(E&W); Senior Court of Protection Deputyship Unit

överförmydare : chief guardian (query: dictionary-driven Swenglish), Prisma & Gullberg -> also 'Court of Chancery' & Public Trustee. Satellite offices or agencies are dotted around Sweden. Hence, regional or provincial unit.

Guardian is used in E&W for minors / children and Court of Protection Deputy/ship, previously Receiver/ship*; Curator/y Bonis in Scotland - for adults with an incapacity, like insanity, so under a physical or legal disability.

*E&W: Under the old law, the Court of Protection had the power to appoint a Receiver to deal with the property and affairs of someone who lacked capacity. The Receiver's role was purely financial. He had no authority to decide where a person should live or what healthcare they should receive

Example sentence:

Överförmyndarnämnden är en tillsynsmyndighet som handlägger ärenden om godmanskap, förvaltarskap och förmynderskap. Förvaltningen rekryterar även nya gode män och förvaltare.

It can be translated into English as "Guardianship Authority" or "Supervisory Guardianship Authority."
