On parle ici de mémoire "vive" au dessus de la barre des 32 ou 64 bits. Cette barre est une limitation imposée par l'architecture des ordinateurs et systèmes d'exploitation. Dans un ordinateur 32 bits, seulement 16 MBytes de mémoire peuvent être utilisés pour rouler les programmes; 16 MBytes est le maximum directement accessible ( pour contenir des programmes ) sous l'architecture 32 bits. Dous l'architecture 64 bits, ce maximum devient plus de 2GBytes. Dans les 2 cas, cette limite est appelée "bar". La mémoire sous la barre peut être utilisée pour rouler des programmes et celle située au dessus de la barre, peut-être utilisée pour contenir des données ( mais pas des programmes ).
