Reference: GCSE Additional Mathematics Reference information: General Certificate of Secondary Education This article's factual accuracy may be compromised due to out-of-date information. Please update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information. (September 2012) The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is an academic qualification awarded in a specified subject, generally taken in a number of subjects by pupils aged 14–16 in secondary education in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. One of the main changes to previous educational qualifications in the United Kingdom was to allow pupils to complete coursework during their two years of study, which was marked by their teachers and contributed to their final examination grade. Additional Mathematics Additional Mathematics is a UK qualification pilot scheme in its final year of implementation for a GCSE level qualification in mathematics which is applied to a range of problems set out in a different format to the standard Mathematics GCSE. This has been formed due to the standard secondary schools in England offering two GCSE qualifications in Science and English but only one in Mathematics and as Mathematics is also a core subject it needs to be viewed on the same level as the other two core subjects (Science and English.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Additional_Mathematics Please be aware that GCSE Additional Mathematics will be awarded for the last time in summer 2014. This specification has now been replaced with the new GCSE Further Mathematics, available for first teaching from September 2013 and awarded for the first time in summer 2014. GCSE Additional Mathematics takes the study of Mathematics beyond the content of GCSE Higher Tier. It introduces some of the mechanics and statistics topics that students encounter in GCE Mathematics and acts as a ‘stepping stone’ between GCSE and GCE. It can also be of benefit to students who are studying (or intending to study) the following subjects at both GCSE and GCE levels: Biology Business Studies Economics Geography http://www.rewardinglearning.org.uk/microsites/mathematics/a... |
