Johannes... ...bien sûr que ... EN CARBURE DE T... est équivalent à EN MATIÈRE DURE (CARBURE DE T...) : vous avez raison. Je n'ai pas choisi votre proposition car cette plaquette est composée d'un SEUL matériau et non DEUX (carbure et diamant) comme le suggérait votre réponse. C'est la seule raison. Ceci étant, je vous ai bien confirmé que j'appréciais vos efforts et votre travail de recherche. Cela m'est également arrivé plusieurs fois de n'avoir eu aucun point après avoir fait de longues recherches et cela sans raison valable. Je pense que les gens apprécient votre contribution sur ce forum et n'arrêtez surtout pas!

Nota: J'ai ajoutée CCGT enfin. Voir mes différentes annexes. Le système KudoZ ne permet pas de modifier la ligne de réponse, mais seulement d'ajouter des explications. C'est pourquoi j'ai supplémenté ma proposition par des alternative formules et liens. Le fait n'avoir reçu pas d'approbation malgré ces efforts est décevant.

Traduction retenue et fermeture de la question Malheureusement, et malgré les efforts de tous (Johannes en particulier encore une fois!), je ne peux adopter telle quelle aucune proposition. J'ai proposé au client la solution suivante : plaquette amovible en carbure de tungstène CCGT (pour usinage de l'aluminium).

Précisions du client Voilà ce que le client m'a indiqué comme compléments d'information importants sur cet outil de coupe :

Insert shape & angle : 80°, diamond
Tool material : Carbide

Donc la forme est bien définie par DIAMOND et l'outil est en CARBURE (de tungstène probablement) et non en DIAMANT.
Je vais tenir compte de ces éléments dans mon choix de traduction et je remercie les gens qui m'ont aidé et, en particulier Johannes.

The homeshopmachinist site is colloquial and therefore not as reliable as an ISO standard.
The ctemag site includes both advertising site and a b2b shop and uses both terms "rhombic" and "diamond" synonymously.
Goodheart-Willcox publishes professional papers for career, marketing and technics. The terminology used depends on the specific editors.
ISO is the only authority for standardizing cutting tool terminology and has the "diamond" shape standardized under the term "rhombic".

Most links in either language (English, French or German) uses the term „diamond“ only for specifying the tip material. There are some rare links, which refers also to the insert shape as “diamond”, but the correct term were “rhombic”.

What is diamond shape? Shaped in a great variety, as described below. Diamond shape is therefore not unambiguous as a rhomb. :

Diamonds occur most often as euhedral or rounded octahedra and twinned octahedra known as macles. As diamond's crystal structure has a cubic arrangement of the atoms, they have many facets that belong to a cube, octahedron, rhombicosidodecahedron, tetrakis hexahedron or disdyakis dodecahedron.

There are four letters in the ANSI/ISO designations. The first specifies the shape of the insert (C=diamond, T=triangle, S=square,...), the second specifies the relief angle (C=7°), the third letter is the precision (ground or molded). The last letter specifies the holding mechanism (screw or clamp style) and whether it has a chipbreaker.
