The Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC), which is placed on the land next to our health centre is in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Konbit Santé. Together we have begun to get a grip on the treatment of cholera sufferers across the north. We have been receiving 400-600 patients a week and the mortality rate has dropped from 7.5% down to less than 1% in recent weeks. This is a huge step forward and the partnership of all our organisations is key to that. Once again we know we have been playing a vital role in a nationwide epidemic. Our health centre has been pivotal in this process, as well as our ambulance. The elections are ongoing, but having a handle on this horrible disease has certainly improved the tense situations in Cap-Haitian.
Prevention

We are carrying out a comprehensive health and hygiene promotion campaign. With the support of BMS World Mission we have trained over 400 local pastors and community leaders to be coaches and supervisors to 650 Village Health Team (VHT) members. Together they are strengthening community health hygiene promotion activities through sustained house-to-house visits. We have also provided various media tools, such as radio messages, text messages and printed materials which can reach even the most remote parts of rural north Haiti.

In outlying rural villages getting health care infrastructure in place can be much harder, particularly when you are working against the clock to prevent the spread of a fatal disease like Cholera . Together with Konbit Santé we have set up Cholera Prevention Rally Posts, about 50 so far. Staffed by community health workers, trained by us, they are providing a free cholera service to communities otherwise abandoned. They include education on sanitation, stigma, symptoms of cholera and how to avoid contracting the disease. They provide a distribution point for soap, other cleaning agents and water purification tablets. They offer clean drinking water and Oral Re-hydration Salts (ORS). If someone is showing the early signs of Cholera, ORS can be the difference between life and death as they are taken to the nearest CTC. Cholera can kill someone in a matter of hours. Our intervention here is proving to be hugely successful.
