à l'avant / au niveau de la proue

I'd say that here we are not literally talking about the physical timber known as the 'stem', but rather, the part of the barge at the front, known as the 'bow' or 'stem', i.e. opposing 'stern'

See this entry from R+C which makes the distinction clear:
