The point I tried to get over was that the words "on the grounds of" were left out of the phrase you posted, but they did appear in the text underneath.
This is the wording I would suggest for starters - hope it helps...
Many unoccupied buildings sit there just waiting for windows to be smashed or to become targets for arson attacks; but we really don't know how close I am, 'cos you didn't give us all too much context, did you...
