English term

700 acres of land

English to German Tech/Engineering Surveying
In a legal document that was translated into German in Germany, the term "700 acres of land" was simply stated as "700 Morgen".
To my knowledge, a "Morgen" of land in German could be anything between 0.6 to 0.9 of an acre here.
Would it not be more accurate to express this "700 acres" in a different manner? Just how, I am not sure.
Could anyone help, please?
Thanks.

Discussion

hazmatgerman (X) Dec 18, 2010:
= 4047 m². Eine Gleichsetzung 1 acre = 1 Morgen ist vollkommen daneben.

Thank you everyone in addition to Paul. I find it strange that the EU can simply assume that an acre equals one "Morgen".
I will stick with my initial idea of converting the 700 acres to ha.

Bernhard Sulzer Dec 17, 2010:
@Antoinette I switched the language direction and asked a moderator to change the original term to (700) acres of land. Hope that's OK with you. :)
Wendy Streitparth Dec 17, 2010:

English term (edited): 700 "Morgen"
Selected

700 Morgen

As you note, the size of a Morgen varies. If you're translating from German, unless you have something to indicate what size the Morgen are in this context, you should leave it in German and put in a translator note.
Now as concerns 700 acres, that is well defined. That's about 283 hectares. If you're translating into German, particularly if it's a legal document, you might say something like "700 Acre [ungefaehr283 Hectar]".

Thank you, Paul, for confirming my initial opinion. Antoinette
